My Political Future (Running in 2024?)
So since I was a teenager I have been vocal about my plans to run for political office. I originally had planned to run for WV House of Delegates in 2020 when I would have been 19 years old. However, a bout of depression & anxiety made it to where I failed to work toward this goal and had planned to give up on my political career (despite remaining passionate).
I would come out of this depression in early 2019 & take the advice of my high school Physics teacher (R.I.P.) to run for a municipal office prior to running for the legislature. As such 2019 became the year that I graduated high school with honors, started university, got my driver’s license, my mom battled cancer, & I ran for Oak Hill City Council, Ward 2. Due to how busy that year was & my anxiety/inability to campaign I did poorly.
Since that point I have build my personal brand around my political ambitions, & regularly comment on current political events. And I recently approached some friends of mine about helping me out with a potential 2024 political campaign. However, it is unlikely for me to win an election due to the corrupt systems our government has created, without first building up a minimum level of personal financial stability.
I am making progress toward that goal of financial stability, though a key requirement prior to making a run for office remains missing. I need a place to live on my own, preferably within the area I currently reside to ensure stability of permanent residence within the legally required jurisdiction as a political candidate and office holder. I plan to make as much progress as I can toward overall financial stability and obtaining a residence of my own in order to follow through with my 2024 election ambitions.
This is unfortunately the reality of running for office is that it is difficult without preexisting financial stability either through extreme luck (defying the systems of impoverishment), or through generational wealth. This leads to older, wealthier individuals being disproportionately represented within our government. Despite my generation (Gen Z) being a demographic within the age range (mid-twenties and younger adults) to run for some political offices few have managed to succeed in this arena.
By the end of this year, 2023, it will be clear what my intentions for 2024 or subsequent elections are. I will try everything within my power, to make a run for the WV House of Delegates, from a district that I feel is being poorly represented in our legislature. Someone I know and agree with on many policies was recently elected in one of the bordering house districts to the one I live in, this is another reason that establishing a permanent residence of my own is so important.
Should I make this run for political office, I will campaign for the nomination of the Democratic Party, actively seeking the endorsements of third parties. If I am to be elected, I would re-register as an Independent and serve as such within the legislature; as both major political parties are to blame for the systems that hold working people in poverty. The campaign will be about Investing in Rural & Underdeveloped Communities, investing in long-term Economic Development with Environmental Stewardship at foremost importance, and being responsible with moderate Fiscal policy.
If I am unable to make a run for state legislative office in 2024, I will make such a run at a later date. It should also be noted that municipal office is definitively still on the table, and other options as well.
Toward building the financial stability necessary, I have begun to save money toward finding a place of my own, toward future living expenses, toward fixing up my vehicle, and overall financial stability. I am in a position in my life where 2024 is possible. There are factors outside of my control and my own personal, selfish, well-being that could affect the progress I am making toward this goal. I am confident that a favorable outcome will occur, though there is a potential for an incorrect outcome that would force my priorities to shift.
I look forward to updating you on my progress and decision at the end of this year. If you would like to follow me on social media you can find me @Lopez4Change. #Peace #Love #Equality
